Future of Television- OLED Television
Imagine a tv screen that only weighs a few ounces, is as thin as a piece of paper and is so flexible that it can be bent around anything while continuing to display images, and you’ll begin to see why OLEd Television (or OLED) is the future of television.
An OLED Television is one that uses organic based compounds to emit red, green and blue light which, when combined, can be used to make over 16 million colours. They are available in two types – small molecule and polymers; the world’s first screen, built by Sony, used small molecules due to their long lifespan.
An OLED Television works by squeezing a layer of organic materials between a cathode and anode which are in turn compressed between two glass plates. The display is then supported by hardened plexiglass to keep its shape and protect the inner materials from damage.
Electric currents are then passed through the cathode and anode, causing the organic materials to emit a bright electro-luminescent light.
The screens don’t require backlights to energise their organic materials or ‘twist’ crystals like LCD tv’s do. This means the Organic Television displays can be extremely thin and use substantially less power, which is better for the environment and saves the viewer significant amounts of money in electricity bills.
